Let’s start with the meaning hidden behind the title: APT.
APT. is actually a Korean drinking game that Rose really enjoys playing with her friends. One day, they were hanging out in the studio, and she thought, “Why not teach you guys some Korean drinking games?” So, they gave it a go.
The game works like this: everyone chants “apateu” while placing their hands in the center of a circle. Someone calls out a number, and as you count up to that number, the person at the bottom moves their hand to the top. The last person to do so has to take a shot.
Ok! Time to learn some English. I picked 7 phrases from the song, are you ready? Let’s go!
One. I’m tryna kiss your lips for real
Tryna. That’s a short for ‘I’m trying to’. For real is ‘in reality’, not just via text messages. I’m tryna kiss your lips for real. I’m trying to kiss your lips in reality. For real.
For real has another and very modern meaning. It;s often used in phrases like:
Are you for real?
Which means: ‘Are you serious?’, ‘Are you kidding me?’
‘For real’ is like asking: ‘is that really true?’
Two. Red hearts, red hearts That’s what I’m on, yeah.
Red hearts in my view refer to emoji. But what’s more interesting here is the phrase: ‘That’s what I’m on’. That’s what I’m talking about.
But it has other meanings. To be on something means ‘I’m actively dealing with a problem’. I’m on it. I’m taking care of it. Like in this example:
Paper work? Don’t worry, I’m on it.
Three. Don’t you want me like I want you, baby? Don’t you need me like I need you now?
Negative questions! So useful and practical, yet for some reason we are scared to use them? They don’t sound natural but only because we don’t use them often enough to make them sound natural. Fo example:
Don’t you like broccoli?
Don’t you need my help?
It can sound like a rhetorical question. All depends on the context but also intonation.
Four. Sleep tomorrow, but tonight go crazy.
Tonight go crazy. To go crazy. What does it mean? Well, it means exactly what you think, to lose control, to start behaving wild. Also, to behave irrationally. To go nuts, to freak out, to become insane. For example:
I can’t find my car! I must be going crazy.
Five. All you gotta do is just meet me
All you gotta do. Another short form, this time it means two things.
One: I have to. For example:
I gotta go.
Two: Have got a. For example:
I gotta move like Jagger.
I gotta feeling.
Six. Hold on, hold on.
Hold on means ‘wait’. For example:
Hold on a minute, I need to lace up my shoes.
Seven. I’m on my way.
It’s a common way of telling someone that you are going to that person. I’m coming. For instance:
Just be patient, I’m on my way.
That was the last phrase of my choice. I hope you understand the meaning of them, because now you’re going to speak some English! Listen and repeat after me.
Are you for real?
Paper work? Don’t worry, I’m on it.
Don’t you like broccoli?
Don’t you need my help?
I can’t find my car! I must be going crazy.
I gotta go.
I gotta move like Jagger.
I gotta feeling.
Hold on a minute, I need to lace up my shoes.
Just be patient, I’m on my way.
Beautiful! Thanks!
