You’ll boost your vocabulary, brush up your grammar and improve your pronunciation. Enjoy your journey to fluency!

Hello! Thank you for stepping by! Today’s topic is just perfect for this time of year: winter vocabulary you’ll actually use. You know, not those random words from textbooks that you’ll forget before the snow melts, but real phrases and collocations you can drop into conversations every day. These are the expressions that will make you sound natural and prepared for the winter season.

So, grab a hot beverage, wrap up warm, and let’s go!

One. Cold snap. A short period of very cold weather, usually unexpected. It’s like when winter surprises you with extra cold days!
Example: A cold snap is coming tomorrow. Stay warm!

Two. Layer up. Put on several layers of clothes to stay warm. Think of a sandwich! Or better yet! Think of an onion! Each layer keeps you warmer.
Example: You need to layer up; it’s freezing outside.

Three. Snowed in. When there’s so much snow, you can’t leave your house. Imagine being trapped by snow—kind of like a snow jail!
Example: We were snowed in and couldn’t leave the house.

Four. Cozy up. To get comfortable and warm, often with a blanket or someone else.

Example: Let’s cozy up on the couch with a blanket.

Five. Slip on ice. To lose balance and fall because the ground is icy.
Example: Watch out! You might slip on the ice.

Six. Shovel snow. To clear snow away with a shovel. It’s hard work with a big scoop to get rid of snow. Hard work but also good exercise. Cardio and heavy lifting!
Example: I have to shovel snow from the driveway today.

Seven. Heavy snowfall. It’s when a lot of snow falls in a short time.
Example: Heavy snowfall is expected tonight. Drive safely.

Eight. Ice skating. Moving on ice using skates. Fun but a bit tricky at first!
Example: We went ice skating yesterday.

Nine. Catch a cold. To get sick from cold weather. Nobody likes sneezing and coughing, so dress warmly!
Example: Don’t forget your scarf, or you’ll catch a cold.

Ten. Frosty morning. A cold morning when the ground is covered with frost (tiny ice crystals). It looks pretty, but it’s a sign it’s really cold.
Example: It was a frosty morning.

Eleven. Hot beverages. Warm drinks like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. A warm hug in a cup!
Example: Hot beverages are perfect for cold days.

Twelve. Winter wonderland. A place that looks magical because of the snow. Picture everything covered in snow—it’s so pretty and calm!
Example: The snowy park looks like a winter wonderland.

Thirteen. Defrost the car. To melt ice off your car windows. You need heat or a scraper to see through your windows again.
Example: I had to defrost the car before I left.

Fourteen. Wrap up warm. To dress warmly so you don’t get cold. Imagine wrapping yourself like a burrito in warm clothes!
Example: Wrap up warm, or you’ll freeze outside.

Fifteen. Slippery conditions. When roads or pavements are icy and easy to slip on.
Example: The roads are icy and slippery. Be careful.

Sixteen. Get snowed under. To have so much to do that you feel overwhelmed. It’s like being buried in snow but with tasks instead!
Example: I got snowed under with work yesterday.

Seventeen. Stay indoors. To remain inside where it’s warm and safe.
Example: Let’s stay indoors today. It’s too cold outside.

Eighteen. Wear woolen socks. Thick, warm socks made of wool. They’re like little sweaters for your feet!
Example: Woolen socks will keep your feet warm.

Nineteen. Cold draft. Cold air that sneaks into a room through a window or door.
Example: I feel a cold draft coming through the door.

Twenty. Chilly breeze. A light, cold wind. Even a small wind can feel icy in winter!
Example: A chilly breeze is making it feel colder.

Twenty one. Snowball fight. A fun game where people throw snowballs at each other.
Example: We had a fun snowball fight in the garden.

Now, let’s not forget about your speaking practice. Now I want you to focus 100% on the sentences below. Listen and repeat after me:
