It’s at teacherola.com/liveclass. Let’s start today’s topic and let’s learn English with Meghan Trainor and her song ‘Made You Look’.
Meghan Trainor’s “Made You Look” is a single released alongside her album Takin’ It Back. It’s another personal song from the American singer that offers insight into her own perspective. “Made You Look” is a song that celebrates self-confidence in a long-term relationship. Meghan Trainor shares her belief that she can still captivate her partner, even after years of marriage and the physical changes that come with life. Listen to the lyrics and repeat them out loud, line by line.
I could have my Gucci on
I could wear my Louis Vuitton
But even with nothin’ on
Bet I made you look
Gucci – Well, let’s take a quick look at pronunciation. How do you pronounce the name of this Italian luxury fashion brand? It’s “Goo-chee”. Examples:
She loves to wear Gucci clothes and accessories because of their stylish design.
His father gifted him a limited edition Gucci watch on his graduation day.
Louis Vuitton – here’s another luxury fashion house and brand but this time French. The pronunciation must be more challenging since it’s French, right? The correct pronunciation of this bran’d name is “loo-ee vwee-tahn” in French, but it is commonly pronounced as “loo-ee vee-ton” in English.
Bet I made you look – I made you look, I caused you to have a look at me or at something. It’s often used as a playful or teasing way of saying that you caught someone’s attention or made them notice something. It can also be used to imply that you tricked or fooled someone into looking at something. Listen to this short dialogue:
Child A: Look at that bird over there!
Child B: Where? I don’t see it.
Child A: I made you look!
Let’s listen and repeat another few lines of the lyrics:
I’ll make you double take soon as I walk away
Call up your chiropractor just in case your neck break
Ooh, tell me what you gon’ do,
‘Cause I’m ’bout to make a scene, double up that sunscreen
I’ll make you double take – The phrase “I’ll make you double take” means that she will do or say something that will cause the listener to look or react twice, in surprise or disbelief. She will make him look again. For instance:
A magician performing a trick might say to the audience:
Watch carefully, because I’ll make you double-take when the card disappears and reappears in my hand!
When I tell you the price of this dress, it’ll make you double-take!
Call up your chiropractor – A chiropractor is a licensed healthcare professional who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, particularly those related to the spine. A person whose job involves treating some diseases and physical problems by pressing and moving the bones in a person’s spine or joints. She says he will have to call professional help because when he turns his head so much his neck might break. Call up your chiropractor. Example sentence:
After a car accident, Jane went to see a chiropractor to address her back pain and stiffness.
My dad has been seeing a chiropractor regularly for years to help manage his chronic lower back pain.
I’m ’bout to make a scene – ‘I’m ’bout to make a scene’ means that someone is going to act out in a way that will draw a lot of attention and possibly cause a disturbance. It often indicates that the person is feeling very emotional or upset. I’m about to make a scene in example sentences:
When my ex shows up at the party with his new girlfriend, I’m about to make a scene.
The airline lost my luggage and won’t refund me – I’m ’bout to make a scene at the customer desk.
Here’s the next bit of the lyrics. Listen and repeat out loud.
I’m ’bout to turn the heat up, gonna make your glasses steam
Ooh, tell me what you gon’ do
When I do my walk,
I can guarantee your jaw will drop
‘Cause they don’t make a lot of what I got
Ladies if you feel me, this your bop
Gonna make your glasses steam – The phrase means that she is about to do or say something that will make the listener feel hot or flustered, confused causing their glasses to fog up. Here are two example sentences using this phrase:
Wait until you taste the spicy ramen at this restaurant – it’s so hot it’ll make your glasses steam!
That politician caused his opponent’s glasses to steam up in frustration.
I can guarantee your jaw will drop – it means that she is certain that the way she looks and walks will amaze, surprise, or shock him to the extent that their mouth will open in astonishment. Other examples:
You won’t believe the view from the top of the mountain – I can guarantee your jaw will drop!
I’ll tell you something about our boss that will make your jaw drop.
‘Cause they don’t make a lot of what I got – she knows very well that she possesses something unique, rare, or valuable that is not easily found or replicated. She is unique and unavailable. Here is an example sentence with the phrase:
These vintage shoes are one-of-a-kind, they don’t make a lot of them.
Ladies if you feel me, this your bop – here she is addressing women and asking if they can relate to what is being said. If they can, then this piece of music is something that they will enjoy and dance to. This is your song, your dance, your party. For example:
When I’m feeling down, I put on my favourite bop and dance my worries away.
This is the last part of the lyrics, listen and repeat:
Yeah, I look good in my Versace dress (take it off)
But I’m hotter when my morning hair’s a mess
‘Cause even with my hoodie on
Bet I made you look
And once you get a taste, you’ll never be the same
This ain’t that ordinary, this that 14 karat cake
Versace dress (take it off) – it’s widely pronounced as ‘ver-sa-chee’ but since it’s an Italian brand, it should be pronounced: ver-sa-che’. The stress is on the second syllable. An example sentence:
He always wears Versace suits to important business meetings.
In the same line, we also hear the phrase: ‘take it off’, which means, remove this item of clothing. For instance:
It’s so hot in here, I need to take off my sweater.
Don’t forget to take off your shoes before you come in.
I’m hotter when my morning hair’s a mess – my morning hair is a mess. When someone says that, they are expressing that their hair is tangled or untidy in appearance. After waking up, look into your mirror and what you see on your head is messy hair. Some more examples of how to use the word ‘mess’:
I need to clean up this mess before our guests arrive.
The kitchen was a complete mess after the dinner party.
I made a mess while trying to bake a cake from scratch.
‘Cause even with my hoodie on – A hoodie is a type of sweatshirt or jacket with a hood attached. It’s made of soft and comfortable materials and is worn for warmth and casual style. Here are two example sentences:
He put on his favourite hoodie and went for a walk in the park.
She loves to wear a hoodie when she’s around the house at the weekends.
Get a taste – it means to try or experience something for a short time or in a small amount. It’s like taking a small bite of some food to see if you like it or trying a new activity briefly just to see if you enjoy it. It implies that the person is curious or interested in exploring the thing further. Examples:
She tried bungee jumping for the first time and got a taste for extreme sports.
They went to a salsa dancing class and got a taste for Latin music and culture.
This ain’t that ordinary, this that 14 karat cake – ‘ordinary’ means something that is common, average, or usual, and not particularly special or different. In the lyrics she sings this ain’t that ordinary, so it’s the opposite of ‘ordinary’. And then she says ‘this that 14 karat cake’. Well, you might think it’s about jewellery, about gold, karat, right? No, it’s about buttocks. Butt. It’s a slang word, and this 14-karat cake is a large or well-shaped butt.
She was an ordinary person with a regular job and a simple life.
The purest gold is 24 karats.
Here you have it! All the lyrics repeated, explained and expanded. Now, let’s recap some of the sentences. Listen and repeat them out loud:
I made you look!
When I tell you the price of this dress, it’ll make you double take!
When my ex shows up at the party with his new girlfriend, I’m about to make a scene.
I’ll tell you something about our boss that will make your jaw drop.
These vintage shoes are one-of-a-kind, they don’t make a lot of them.
Don’t forget to take off your shoes before you come in.
I need to clean up this mess before our guests arrive.
He put on his favourite hoodie and went for a walk in the park.
She tried bungee jumping for the first time and got a taste for extreme sports.
She was an ordinary person with a regular job and a simple life.
