Hello there! Last week we had the first-ever English Live Class. It was a great experience for me and for the participants, I got beautiful comments, and people loved it. You can purchase access to that English Live Class with Wednesday in my shop at teacherola.com. What you get is access to the recording from our lesson. You can see what such a class looks like, and how people take part in it. Additionally, you’ll receive materials to help you get ready for the lesson. It’s a checklist and a list of questions. After watching the recording of English Live Class you get to do homework, it’s also included. I forgot to mention audio materials, you’ll get them too. They will help you memorize the expressions from the show. Today I’ve decided to pick ten expressions from the checklist for further practice. Soon we’ll have another English Live Class, this time it’s gonna be on Sunday 19.02.2023 so please save the date! We’ll meet at 8pm. And now:
10 expressions from the first episode of the Netflix show ‘Wednesday’:
One. Pull yourself together. It means to recover control of your emotions. For example:
I know it’s difficult to get over your loss, but try to pull yourself together and get on with life.
Two. Leave this to me. You can use the expression ‘leave it with me’ when you want to assure someone else that you will take responsibility for an action. You will deal with the matter at hand or address the problem.
Like in this sentence:
Leave it to me, and I’ll take care of it
Three. Do you intend on giving us the cold shoulder? To give someone a cold shoulder means to treat somebody in a way that is not friendly.
Most of the other professors gave him the cold shoulder.
Four. Your parents pulled strings. To pull strings means to use somebody’s status or influence to gain an advantage or to obtain an advantage for someone else, usually in an unfair manner. Someone who pulls strings controls a situation. Listen to this example sentence:
I may be able to pull a few strings for you if you need the document urgently.
Five. Don’t mess with me. To mess with someone is to get into conflict with someone or something. Listen to this sentence:
That group of boys is dangerous, don’t mess with them.
Six. Beginner’s luck. It’s said usually enviously or with skepticism when an inexperienced person achieves success. For instance:
The success of his first restaurant was just beginner’s luck.
Seven. A run for my money. This complex I’d say figure of speech means simply a challenge. Look at this sentence:
Sure, Anna deserved that victory, but Adam really gave her a run for her money!
Eight. I’ll sweeten the pot. It means to make something more enticing, alluring, or attractive, especially from a financial perspective. Listen to this:
He was still unsure whether he wanted the job, so the company offered to sweeten the pot with an excellent pension plan.
Nine. If the buckled shoe fits. The original expression is: if the shoe fits, wear it. It’s used to say that something said or suggested about a person is true and that the person should accept it as true. Let’s illustrate it with an example:
“Are you calling me a liar?” “Well, if the shoe fits, wear it.”
Ten. Ground zero for all things weird. So the question is what’s ‘ground zero’. It’s the point directly above, below, or at which a nuclear explosion occurs or the centre or origin of rapid, intense, or violent activity or change. Nevermore is ground zero for all things weird because outcasts attend the school. It’s also the starting point or base. An example:
If you’re starting at ground zero in terms of knowledge, go to the library.
That’s it, ten expressions I picked from the Netflix show ‘Wednesday’. Listen to 10 sentences once again and this time, say them out loud.
I know it’s difficult to get over your loss, but try to pull yourself together and get on with life.
